The main difference is that what the Old Covenant promised through ceremonies and sacrifices, the New Covenant reveals as fulfilled in the person and work of Jesus. Part of our problem as late 20th century believers is that we are largely ignorant of the Old Covenant Scriptures. This was not the case among first century believers. The New Covenant Scriptures refer constantly to the Old Covenant.
So because we are meeting with God, to receive His ministry to us, to break the tyrannical pattern of the world, and to join in the eschatological chorus, let us do so with “reverence and godly fear, for our God is a consuming fire” (Heb. 12:28–29).
The central doctrine of the Reformation was justification by grace alone through faith alone. We believe that by trusting in Christ alone for our salvation, we are declared righteous. All of Christ’s perfect obedience is charged to our account and our sins are regarded as having been paid for at the cross.
